THE STANDARDBRED OWNERS ASSOCIATION OF NEW YORK /
YONKERS RACEWAY JOHN R. BRENNAN SCHOLARSHIP
2024 - 2025 ACADEMIC YEAR
The following conditions apply:
- All applications must be mailed to the SOA of NY Scholarship Fund, 733 Yonkers Avenue, Suite 102, Yonkers, New York 10704 and be postmarked no later than May 31, 2024.
- Three scholarships in the amounts of $10,000, $5,000 and $3,000 will be awarded for the 2024 Fall semester and will be awarded based on merit and financial need.
- Applicants must have already been accepted in an accredited program of study, leading specifically to a degree or certification beyond the high school level.
- Prior recipients of a SOA of NY scholarship are eligible to apply. However, no applicant may be awarded more than two scholarships.
- The scholarship applicant or his/her immediate family member must be a 2024 SOA of NY member (driver, trainer and/or owner) in good standing or an immediate family member of a caretaker/groom employed or contracted by a SOA of NY member racing at Yonkers Raceway. An immediate family member means spouse or child.
- Either the applicant or one of their parents must have participated at Yonkers Raceway in the last 12 months as:
- Professional Driver - minimum of 250 drives.
- Amateur Driver - minimum of 10 drives.
- Trainer - minimum of 50 starts.
- Owner - minimum of 50 starts.
- The scholarship awards will be announced no later than mid-July 2024.
- If there are more than 5 applicants, an independent third party will review the applications and submit their top five candidates to the SOA of NY’s Scholarship Committee. The Committee then will select the top three winners. Personal information of all candidates is redacted when presented to the independent third party and to the Scholarship Committee to ensure a blind judging process.
- Members of the SOA Board of Directors and their immediate families are not eligible.
